ROSE

It’s been three days since Tristan visited me at the flower shop, and I’m a stir-crazy mess. My emotions are all over the damn place. I’m giddy and floating on a damn cloud half the time because I’ve never had an orgasm like that before. But I’m also irritated and confused why I haven’t heard from him in three damn days.

“Are you on your period?” Grandma Sally asks, her voice gentle and concerned.

“No, Grandma Sally.” At least she didn’t ask in front of anyone but Zelda. I’ve been asked equally embarrassing questions in front of customers.

“Is this about your mother? I saw she sent another postcard.”

I’d forgotten about the stupid postcard from Fiji until now. Guess my orgasm-high will be wearing off completely now. “I don’t have a mother.”

Grandma Sally and Zelda exchange a sympathetic look with each other, one they think I don’t see. The subject of my mother is a sore one. Grandma Sally will always love her daughter, no matter how many mistakes she makes. It’s our mutual agreement for the sake of our very special relationship—I don’t give her grief for loving her daughter, and she doesn’t try to convince me to forgive my mom.

“It’s about a man,” Zelda says matter-of-factly, sipping on her second—or maybe third—coffee mug of white zinfandel.

“It’s not about a man,” I lie.

“Has Tristan been by?” Grandma Sally asks, waggling her eyebrows. I never mentioned his late-night stop. One that he hasn’t repeated. The jerk hasn’t even sent me a text. All those feel good feelings he injected into me via his lips of perfection and the mind-blowing orgasm are gone now.

“It was a one-day deal, Grandma Sally. Valentine’s Day is over, so he won’t be helping me make any more deliveries.” Or giving me any more orgasms in the back room.

“He was your Valentine?” Zelda coos.

“No.” But he kind of was. Well, he kissed me on the magical holiday that was, up until now, my favorite. The rest of what we did happened the day after…but details. “He’s not coming back, so just forget it.”

“Oh really?”

“Yes, really.” If I wasn’t the owner, I’d toss away my apron and storm out for the day. I really am in a piss-poor mood over all this. I never drink while working, but I’m tempted to steal the bottle for myself and take it home.

“Then why’s he headed this way?” Zelda chimes in.

“He’s—” But I don’t get any words out before Tristan comes through the front door, looking like a sinfully delightful treat in those worn jeans and oil-stained t-shirt. His hair is just a touch too long, and messes up so easily in that perfectly sexy just-rolled-out-of-bed way.

“Tristan,” I say unsure of what to make of his unexpected appearance—during the day, no less. “Do you need flowers?”

“We’re having a sale on irises,” Grandma Sally chimes in. “But only if you’re buying for a relative.”

I shoot Grandma Sally a really? look. But secretly I love how fiercely protective of me she is.

“I don’t need flowers. Not right now, anyway.
